C++ Market: Salaries Soared by 20% — What's Happening?

According to specialized HR agencies and job aggregators (Habr Career, Glassdoor, Indeed), in the first half of 2024, average salary offers for C++ developers increased by 18–22% compared to the same period last year. This is one of the most significant jumps among all programming languages this year.

Analysts attribute the boom to several fundamental factors. First and foremost, C++ is the language for tasks where performance is critical: game engines, high-load servers, financial systems, and hardware programming (embedded). In the context of global digital transformation, demand for such specialists exceeds supply.

Key Drivers of Salary Growth

  • Shortage of personnel in embedded development. Automotive electronics, IoT devices, and industrial controllers are increasingly written in C++. Companies are willing to pay 30–40% above the market rate to fill such vacancies.
  • AI and game dev boom. Unreal Engine 5 and proprietary engines require deep knowledge of C++. Studios are looking for senior developers with optimization experience, and competition for them is growing.
  • Financial sector (HFT, algorithmic trading). Transaction execution speed is a key factor. C++ remains the standard for low-latency systems, and salaries here are traditionally above average.
  • Increase in the number of vacancies for Middle+. There are fewer juniors, and there is a shortage of seniors. Employers are raising rates for experienced engineers to poach them from other companies.

Numbers: How Much Do C++ Developers Earn Now?

The average salary of a C++ programmer (Middle level) in Russia is 250,000–350,000 rubles per month. Senior specialists receive from 400,000 rubles, and a Team Lead or Architect — up to 600,000 rubles and higher. For comparison, a year ago, the same figures were 20–25% lower.

In the foreign market (remote work), rates have also increased: from $6,000–$8,000 for Middle to $15,000+ for Senior roles in HFT or game dev.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

The salary growth is not only good news but also a signal. Employers have become more demanding. Simply knowing C++ syntax is not enough. Today, the following are valued:

  • Deep understanding of memory (RAII, smart pointers, move semantics);
  • Experience with multithreading and low-level optimization;
  • Skills in working with CMake, Docker, CI/CD for C++ projects.

If you are learning C++ or already working with it — now is the best time to upgrade your skills and negotiate a raise. The market is on your side.
