C++ is back on top: why do developers love this language?

According to the annual Stack Overflow 2024 developer survey, the C++ programming language has confidently entered the top three most loved languages among professional programmers. This result came as a surprise to many who are used to considering C++ "difficult" or "outdated." On the contrary, the community showed that C++ is alive, relevant, and continues to win the hearts of new generations of developers.

What did the survey show?

The Stack Overflow survey involved more than 65,000 developers from around the world. Respondents were asked to indicate the languages they use and those they love. C++ ranked:

  • 3rd place among the most loved languages (after Rust and TypeScript);
  • 6th place in frequency of use (after JavaScript, Python, TypeScript, C#, and Java);
  • High percentage of "love" — more than 60% of respondents who use C++ noted that they enjoy writing in it.

Why is C++ trendy again?

Many experts attribute the growing popularity of C++ to several factors:

  • Performance — C++ remains king in real-time systems, game engines (Unreal Engine), high-load servers, and embedded systems.
  • Evolution of standards — the release of C++20 and C++23 brought modules, concepts, coroutines, and ranges. Code has become cleaner and safer, while maintaining speed.
  • Growing interest in low-level development — with the rise of IoT, autonomous systems, and blockchain, programmers are again valuing control over memory and resources.
  • Community and tools — CMake, Conan, modern IDEs (CLion, VS Code) have made C++ development more comfortable than ever.

Who loves C++ the most?

According to the survey, C++ is especially valued by:

  • Game developers (gamedev);
  • Engineers in robotics and autonomous vehicles;
  • Specialists in financial algorithms (high-frequency trading);
  • Systems programmers working with OS kernels and drivers.

What does this mean for beginners?

For those just starting to learn programming, C++ making it into the top loved languages is an excellent signal. It means the language:

  • Does not lose relevance — modern projects are written in it;
  • Provides deep understanding — C++ teaches working with memory, pointers, and computer architecture;
  • Opens doors — to high-paying niches (game dev, fintech, embedded).

Of course, C++ is more difficult than Python or JavaScript. But it is precisely this complexity that gives the developer a superpower — full control over the hardware. And, judging by the Stack Overflow survey, many programmers are willing to pay this price for the love of speed and efficiency.
