JavaScript (Node.js) Conference: Main Announcements

In October 2024, the largest conference on JavaScript and Node.js took place, gathering thousands of developers from around the world. The event served as a platform for major announcements, demonstrations of new platform capabilities, and discussions about the future of server-side JavaScript. The PythonLib editorial team highlighted the most important news that will impact every Node.js developer's work.

1. Node.js 22 — Long-Awaited Release

The main event was the announcement of the stable version of Node.js 22. Developers presented significant performance and security improvements. Key changes include:

  • ESM Module by Default: now all new projects use ES modules without additional configuration;
  • Built-in WebSocket Client: third-party libraries are no longer needed for working with web sockets;
  • Accelerated JSON Parser: parsing speed for large data has increased by 30%.

2. New File System API

An experimental File System Access API was introduced, which allows working with local system files directly from Node.js, similar to the browser. This simplifies creating desktop applications on Electron and hybrid tools.

3. Tools for Microservices

At the conference, the official module @nodejs/service-bridge for building microservice architecture was announced. It includes:

  • built-in load balancing;
  • support for gRPC and REST;
  • automatic service discovery.

4. Improved TypeScript Support

Node.js developers announced plans for fully native execution of TypeScript files without a compilation step. In version 23, an experimental flag --experimental-strip-types will appear, allowing .ts files to be run directly.

5. Security and Monitoring

In response to the rise in cyberattacks, a new set of security tools was presented:

  • Built-in Audit: built-in dependency vulnerability auditing at startup;
  • Contextual Security: contextual isolation for each request.

6. Community and Open Source

Conference participants supported the Node.js Sustainability Working Group initiative, aimed at improving documentation and attracting new contributors. A plan was adopted to reduce the time between major releases to 12 months.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

The announcements confirm that Node.js continues to evolve as a universal platform for server-side development, cloud applications, and DevOps. We recommend keeping an eye on the Node.js 22 release and testing new APIs in your projects right now — this will allow you to stay one step ahead.
