C++ Community Chooses Best Libraries of the Year: Voting Results

Every year, the international C++ developer community votes for the best libraries that have become indispensable tools for creating high-performance applications. This year, the competition was particularly intense: over 50 projects competed for the title of best in various categories. We have gathered the main winners and newcomers that have already won the hearts of programmers.

The voting took place on major forums and social networks, including Reddit, Stack Overflow, and the official C++ standardization committee. Participants evaluated libraries based on criteria: ease of use, documentation, performance, and contribution to the language ecosystem.

Winners of 2024

  • Boost.Asio — recognized as the best library for asynchronous programming. It allows efficient work with network requests and file operations, supports C++20 coroutines.
  • fmtlib — received the award for "Best Formatting Tool". It replaced outdated printf and iostream, offering a safe and fast syntax for string templates.
  • nlohmann/json — won in the "Ease of Use" category. This library for working with JSON is considered one of the most intuitive: just one line is enough to parse complex structures.
  • Range-v3 — recognized for "Innovation". It implements the concept of ranges, which was included in the C++20 standard and simplifies chains of operations with containers.
  • SFML — became the best in the "Multimedia and Games" category. An easy-to-learn library for working with graphics, sound, and windows.

New Stars of the Ecosystem

In addition to the traditional leaders, the community highlighted several projects that are actively gaining popularity:

  • Crow — a micro-web framework that allows quickly creating REST APIs with minimal overhead.
  • Dear ImGui — a library for creating graphical interfaces in real time, indispensable for developer tools and game editors.
  • Taskflow — a framework for parallel programming with a convenient syntax for describing tasks and dependencies.

What Does This Mean for C++ Developers?

The community's choice highlights key trends: the growing popularity of asynchrony, simplification of data handling (JSON, formatting), and a renewed interest in desktop applications with rich interfaces. Many libraries are already being actively integrated into modern compilers (GCC 14, Clang 18) and the standard library.

For those just starting to learn C++ or wanting to update their technology stack, these projects will be an excellent starting point. They all have open source code, detailed documentation, and an active community ready to help beginners.
