Java 2025 Learning Plan: Where to Start for Beginners
Java remains one of the most in-demand languages in enterprise development, the Android mobile ecosystem, and backend services. In 2025, the language's popularity is only growing thanks to the release of new LTS versions, performance improvements, and the active development of frameworks. If you've decided to learn Java from scratch, we've prepared a clear learning plan for you to help you not get lost in the sea of information.
Why Learn Java in 2025?
- Stability and legacy. Millions of lines of code in banking, telecom, and the public sector are written in Java — these systems will be maintained for decades.
- Android. Kotlin is replacing Java, but the Android base is still Java, and most job vacancies require knowledge of both languages.
- Salaries. Java developers are among the highest-paid specialists, even at the junior level.
- Community. A huge number of libraries, frameworks, and free courses.
Stage 1: Basic Syntax and Logic (2–3 weeks)
Start by installing JDK 21 (LTS) and IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition. Learn:
- Data types, variables, operators
- Conditional constructs (if, switch)
- Loops (for, while, do-while)
- Arrays and basic strings
- Methods and recursion
Resource: Codecademy "Learn Java" or the book "Java: A Beginner's Guide" by Herbert Schildt.
Stage 2: OOP — The Heart of Java (3–4 weeks)
Java is a strictly object-oriented language. Without a deep understanding of OOP, you won't be able to write quality code.
- Classes and objects
- Encapsulation, inheritance, polymorphism
- Abstract classes and interfaces
- Exceptions (try-catch-finally)
- Generics
Practice: Write a console calculator, then a "Library" application (adding/removing books).
Stage 3: Tools and Ecosystem (2 weeks)
Learn to use the standard Java developer toolkit:
- Maven or Gradle (project building)
- Git and GitHub (version control system)
- JUnit (unit testing)
- Logging (SLF4J + Logback)
Stage 4: Databases and JDBC (2–3 weeks)
Almost any application stores data. Master:
- SQL (SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, subqueries)
- JDBC — connecting to a database from Java
- Basics of Hibernate (ORM framework)
Stage 5: Web Development in Java (4–6 weeks)
The most in-demand skill is creating REST APIs. Go through:
- Basics of HTTP, JSON, REST
- Spring Boot (starter, controllers, services)
- Spring Data JPA (working with databases)
- Postman for API testing
Project: Create a simple TODO service with CRUD operations and storage in PostgreSQL.
