Salaries of C++ Developers Have Increased by 20%: What's Behind the Record Jump

The job market for C++ developers is experiencing a real boom. According to the latest data from specialized HR platforms and salary aggregators, the average income of C++ specialists over the past 12 months has increased by 20%. This figure significantly outpaces the average salary growth dynamics in the IT sector, which, according to various estimates, is 8–12%.

Analysts attribute such explosive growth to several key factors. Firstly, C++ remains the "workhorse" for high-load systems where every microsecond is critical. Secondly, there is an acute shortage of senior engineers capable of working with legacy code and modern standards (C++20/23).

Market Snapshot: Who Earns How Much

The average salary of a C++ developer in Russia (according to Q3 2024 data) is 320,000 – 380,000 rubles before taxes. However, the spread depending on grade and specialization is enormous:

  • Junior C++ Developer (0–1 year): from 80,000 to 150,000 rubles. Growth over the year — 12%.
  • Middle C++ Developer (2–4 years): from 200,000 to 300,000 rubles. Growth — 18%.
  • Senior C++ Developer (5+ years): from 400,000 to 700,000 rubles and above. Growth — 25%.
  • Team Lead / Architect: from 600,000 rubles with the possibility of receiving stock options.

The jump is especially noticeable in the fintech and high-frequency trading (HFT) segment, where companies are willing to pay premiums of up to 50% above market rate for experience with low-level optimization and network protocols.

Why Are Employers Overpaying for C++?

The main driver of demand is artificial intelligence and game development. Major players (including companies developing LLMs and engines for Unreal Engine) are actively poaching specialists. In addition, C++ is indispensable in:

  • Development of embedded systems and IoT (demand growth of 30% per year);
  • Creating databases and cloud infrastructure (Yandex, Sber, VK);
  • The automotive industry (autonomous driving systems).

Notably, 40% of current vacancies require knowledge not only of C++, but also of related technologies: Python for scripting, CUDA for GPU computing, Rust for secure modules. "Pure" C++ vacancies are less common, but are paid higher.

Forecast: What Awaits the C++ Market in 2025

Experts believe that growth will continue, although it will slow down to 10–15%. The reason is market saturation with juniors after courses and a shortage of middles and seniors. Companies are increasingly willing to hire remote specialists from the regions, offering Moscow-level salaries.

A key tip for those who want to get to the top: master C++20/23, modules, coroutines, and concepts. The ability to work with multithreading and code profiling (perf, Valgrind, Tracy) increases a candidate's market value by 30–40%.
