Roadmap for C# (.NET) Development in 2025-2026: Overview of Key Innovations

Microsoft continues the active development of the .NET ecosystem, and 2025-2026 promise to be pivotal years for the platform. Following the release of .NET 9 at the end of 2024, the developer community eagerly anticipates .NET 10 (2025) and .NET 11 (2026). Let's break down the main directions that will change the way we work with C#.

1. AOT Compilation and Performance

One of the main trends remains Native AOT (Ahead-of-Time). In .NET 9, support for AOT in ASP.NET Core was significantly improved, and in .NET 10 we expect:

  • Up to 50% reduction in application startup time compared to .NET 8;
  • Reduction in the size of the final binary file (down to 30 MB for simple services);
  • Full AOT support for gRPC and minimal APIs;
  • Integration with container environments (Alpine, Distroless).

This makes C# competitive in the serverless and edge computing segment.

2. New Language Features in C# 14 and C# 15

The C# language continues to evolve. In C# 14 (part of .NET 10) we expect:

  • Primary Constructors for all types — simplifying initialization;
  • Collection Expressions 2.0 — extending syntax for dictionaries and sets;
  • Extended ref struct semantics — for safe memory handling.

For C# 15 (.NET 11), research has been announced in the areas of:

  • Static abstract members of interfaces (further development of generic math);
  • Pattern matching for ranges and indices;
  • Support for roles and data-based polymorphism (roles/extensions).

3. .NET MAUI and Cross-Platform Development

After criticism of .NET MAUI 8, Microsoft is investing in stability. In 2025-2026:

  • Full support for WinUI 3 for Windows applications;
  • Improved integration with SwiftUI on macOS and iOS;
  • Hybrid applications (Blazor Hybrid + MAUI) — a single codebase for Web, Mobile, and Desktop.

4. Cloud Development and Artificial Intelligence

Microsoft is actively integrating AI into .NET. Key announcements:

  • Semantic Kernel SDK — a framework for orchestrating LLMs (GPT-4, Llama) in C#;
  • Built-in vector search support in Entity Framework Core for RAG applications;
  • .NET Aspire — a new tool for cloud microservices (diagnostics, orchestration, cloud queues).

.NET 10 is expected to become the standard for creating AI agents on the Azure platform.

5. Security and WebAssembly

In the area of security:

  • Improved support for WASI (WebAssembly System Interface) — running .NET in the browser and on the server without containers
