Rust 2025 Learning Plan: Where to Start
Rust continues to strengthen its position as one of the most in-demand programming languages. According to the Stack Overflow 2024 survey, Rust has been recognized as the "most loved language" among developers for the eighth year in a row. In 2025, interest in it is only growing: Rust is actively being adopted in the Linux kernel, WebAssembly (WASM), and tools for Data Engineering. If you have decided to start learning Rust, this learning plan will help you build a clear trajectory — from installation to your first serious project.
Stage 1. Preparation and Installation (1–2 days)
The first thing to do is install the toolchain. Use the official installer rustup:
- rustup — Rust version manager (similar to pyenv for Python).
- cargo — build system and package manager (similar to pip + setuptools).
- rustc — the compiler.
After installation, run in the terminal:
rustc --version && cargo --version
For working with code, I recommend VS Code with the rust-analyzer extension — this will provide autocompletion, error highlighting, and quick navigation.
Stage 2. Basic Syntax (1–2 weeks)
At this stage, you get acquainted with variables, data types, control flow constructs, and functions. Key topics:
- Variables and Immutability — in Rust, variables are immutable by default. This reduces the number of errors.
- Data Types — scalar (i32, f64, bool, char) and compound (tuple, array).
- Control Flow Constructs — if/else, loop, while, for.
- Functions — declaration, return values, expressions, and statements.
Practice: write a simple calculator or a temperature conversion program.
Stage 3. Ownership System (2–3 weeks)
This is the most important and unique concept of Rust. It replaces the garbage collector and ensures memory safety at compile time. Study:
- Ownership Rules — each resource has exactly one owner.
- Borrowing — passing references without transferring ownership.
- Lifetimes — a mechanism for checking the validity of references.
- Slices — a reference to a portion of data (strings, arrays).
Practice: implement functions that safely work with strings and vectors without copying.
Stage 4. Structs, Enums, and Pattern Matching (2 weeks)
Rust is a language with a powerful type system. At this stage, you will learn to design data:
- Structs — custom data types.
- Enums — especially
Option<T>andResult<T, E>. - Pattern Matching (match) — similar to switch, but much more flexible.
- Methods and impl — attaching behavior to types.
Practice: create a simple
