C++ Learning Plan 2025: Where a Beginner Should Start

C++ remains one of the most in-demand languages in game development, fintech, embedded systems, and high-load services. In 2025, despite the growth of Rust and Go, C++ still holds leading positions in the TIOBE and GitHub rankings. We have prepared a step-by-step learning plan that will help you master the language from scratch without unnecessary theory and outdated approaches.

Stage 1. Basic Syntax and Logic (2–3 weeks)

Start with the modern C++17/20 standards. Avoid ancient books about C-style arrays and raw pointers — they will only confuse you. Your goal at this stage:

  • Variables, data types, arithmetic and logical operations.
  • Conditional statements (if, switch) and loops (for, while, range-based for).
  • Functions: declaration, parameters, return, overloading.
  • Working with std::string and std::vector — a modern replacement for old arrays.
  • Exception handling via try-catch.

Practice: a calculator, a "Guess the Number" game, a simple to-do list in the console.

Stage 2. OOP and Memory Management (3–4 weeks)

C++ is a multi-paradigm language, but OOP is critically important here. Learn:

  • Classes: constructors, destructors, access modifiers.
  • Inheritance, virtual functions, polymorphism.
  • RAII and smart pointers (std::unique_ptr, std::shared_ptr).
  • The rule of three / five / zero.
  • Static and dynamic libraries, separate compilation (header-only vs .cpp + .h).

Practice: a banking system simulation, "Shape" and "Circle" classes with area calculation.

Stage 3. STL and Algorithms (2–3 weeks)

The Standard Template Library is the heart of modern C++. Without it, writing efficient code is impossible:

  • Iterators and algorithms (std::sort, std::find, std::copy).
  • Containers: std::array, std::deque, std::map, std::set.
  • Lambda expressions and function objects.
  • Working with the file system via std::filesystem (C++17).

Practice: sorting and filtering a CSV file, finding duplicates in a directory.

Stage 4. Tooling and Project Build (1–2 weeks)

Without the right tools, a C++ project turns into chaos. Install:

  • CMake — the standard for building C++ projects.
  • vcpkg or Conan — package managers.
  • GTest / Catch2 — unit testing.
  • Sanitizers (AddressSanitizer, UBSan) — catching memory leaks.
  • Git and CI/CD (GitHub Actions,
