TypeScript 2025 Curriculum: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

TypeScript has firmly established itself as one of the most in-demand languages in web development. By 2025, it has become the de facto standard for building large and medium-sized projects. If you've decided to start learning TypeScript, this curriculum will help you build a logical learning trajectory — from the basics to a confident junior level.

Why TypeScript and Why Do You Need It?

TypeScript is a superset of JavaScript that adds static typing. This means many errors are caught at the code writing stage rather than at runtime. For a beginner, this is especially valuable: the IDE suggests types, autocomplete works more accurately, and the code becomes self-documenting. TypeScript integrates easily with React, Angular, Vue, and Node.js.

Stage 1. Foundation: JavaScript (2–3 weeks)

TypeScript is not a replacement for JS, but its extension. Without confident knowledge of JavaScript, learning TypeScript will be difficult. Master:

  • Basic syntax: variables (let, const), data types, operators
  • Functions: declaration, arrow functions, callbacks
  • Objects and arrays: working methods, destructuring
  • Asynchrony: promises, async/await
  • Modules: import/export

Feel free to move on to TypeScript as soon as you feel confident in these topics.

Stage 2. TypeScript Basics (3–4 weeks)

At this stage, you learn to write typed code. Key topics:

  • Installation and setup: tsc compiler, tsconfig.json
  • Basic types: number, string, boolean, null, undefined, void, never
  • Interfaces and types: interface, type, difference between them
  • Arrays and tuples: typing arrays, tuple
  • Functions: parameter and return types, optional parameters
  • Enum and Union: enumerations and union types

Practice: rewrite 3–4 small JS scripts in TypeScript.

Stage 3. Advanced Typing (2–3 weeks)

Here you will learn to work with generics and utility types:

  • Generics: generic functions, interfaces, classes
  • Utility types: Partial, Required, Pick, Omit, Record
  • Type Guards: narrowing types via typeof, instanceof, custom guards
  • Conditional Types: conditional types (T extends U ? X : Y)
  • Mapped Types: transforming types on the fly

Try implementing a simple type library for working with an API.

Stage 4. TypeScript in Real Projects (3–4 weeks)

Apply your knowledge in the context of popular frameworks:

  • React + TypeScript: typing props, state, hooks (useState, useEffect)
  • Node.js + TypeScript: setting up Express, working with databases
  • Testing: Jest with TypeScript, typing tests
