Go (Golang) 2025 Curriculum: From Zero to Confident Developer
Go (Golang) is a programming language created at Google in 2009, which by 2025 has become the standard for high-load systems, microservices, and cloud applications. Its main advantages are simplicity, compilation speed, and built-in concurrency support. If you have decided to learn Go in 2025, this curriculum will help you structure your learning and avoid common mistakes.
We have broken the process into four stages with a total duration of about 3–4 months (with daily sessions of 1–2 hours). Each stage contains specific topics and practical tasks.
Stage 1: Basic Syntax and Tooling (1–2 weeks)
- Installation and Setup: download Go from the official website, install VS Code with the Go extension.
- Basic Constructs: variables, data types (int, string, bool, slice, map), conditional statements, for loops.
- Functions: declaration, parameters, returning multiple values, anonymous functions.
- Structs and Methods: struct, methods, interfaces — the foundation of OOP in Go.
- Error Handling: error mechanism, panic/recover (avoid overuse).
Resources: official Go tour (tour.golang.org), book "The Go Programming Language" (Donovan, Kernighan).
Stage 2: Concurrency and Standard Library (2–3 weeks)
- Goroutines: launching lightweight threads using go func().
- Channels: passing data between goroutines, buffered and unbuffered channels, select.
- Standard Library: packages fmt, net/http (write a simple web server), encoding/json, io, os.
- Testing: testing package, writing unit tests, benchmarks.
Practice: create a console TODO manager with JSON storage, then add an HTTP interface.
Stage 3: Working with Databases and APIs (2–3 weeks)
- SQL and Go: database/sql package, drivers (pgx for PostgreSQL, go-sqlite3).
- REST API: routers (chi, gorilla/mux), request handling, middleware.
- Migrations: golang-migrate tool, database schema management.
- Docker: containerizing a Go application, writing a Dockerfile.
Practice: develop an API for a blog (CRUD for articles, JWT authorization).
Stage 4: Advanced Topics and Microservices (3–4 weeks)
- Context: passing cancellation and timeouts between goroutines.
- Graceful Shutdown: proper server termination.
- Microservices: interaction via gRPC (protobuf) or HTTP, Service Layer pattern.
- Monitoring: metrics (Prometheus), logging (zerolog, slog).
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions for building and testing.
