Major open-source Swift project (iOS/macOS) seeks contributors

The Swift ecosystem continues to actively develop, and more significant projects are transitioning to open source. This week, the team behind one of the largest open-source solutions for iOS and macOS announced the start of recruiting new contributors. Developers of all levels are invited to contribute to code, documentation, and testing.

The project in question is SwiftOpenKit (name changed), a library for building high-performance interfaces and working with network requests. Currently, the repository has over 12 thousand stars on GitHub and is used in hundreds of commercial applications. The project authors emphasize that they especially lack specialists in the following areas:

  • Development of new UI components in SwiftUI and UIKit with accessibility support.
  • Performance optimization — working with multithreading, reducing memory consumption.
  • Writing and maintaining tests (Unit, UI, Snapshot) for build stability.
  • Localization and documentation — translating README, creating usage examples.
  • Code review and refactoring of existing code to meet modern Swift standards.

According to the project lead, the team currently has about 25 active participants, but at least twice as many are needed to cover all community requests. "We want to make the entry process as friendly as possible," he notes. "Tasks labeled 'good first issue' are prepared for beginners, and complex architectural challenges for experienced developers. Every PR is reviewed within 48 hours."

You can join the project through the official GitHub repository. Start by reading CONTRIBUTING.md and the Code of Conduct. There is also a Discord server where maintainers answer questions daily. For those who want to dive deeper into the Swift ecosystem, this is an excellent opportunity to gain real team development experience and expand your portfolio.

Recall that Swift is not only a language for Apple platforms. Thanks to projects like SwiftOpenKit, it is increasingly used on the server side (Vapor, Hummingbird) and even in embedded systems. Participation in open source is a direct path to networking with industry leaders and a chance to influence the future of the language.

If you have long wanted to try your hand as a contributor but didn't know where to start — now is the best moment. Go to GitHub, choose a task within your capabilities, and submit your first pull request. The Swift community is waiting for you!
