WWDC 2024: What's New in the World of Swift and Apple Platforms

In June 2024, the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) took place. Despite an abundance of hardware news, the main focus was traditionally on software platforms and developer tools. For the Swift community, as well as everyone who develops for iOS and macOS, the conference brought a number of significant announcements. We have gathered the key changes that are worth noting right now.

Swift 6: Stability and Performance

The main news for developers was the release of Swift 6, a new major version of the language. Key improvements affected the concurrency system.

  • Strict Concurrency Checking: The compiler now enables stricter checks by default, preventing data races. This makes code safer.
  • Improved Support for Non-copyable Types: Swift 6 expands capabilities for working with unique resources (file descriptors, buffers), allowing the compiler to more precisely manage object lifetimes.
  • New Collections (C++ Interop): Compatibility with the C++ standard library has been improved, simplifying legacy code integration.

The update also affected the standard library — new algorithms for working with sequences have appeared, and memory operation performance has been improved.

SwiftUI 6: New Interface Capabilities

The framework for building interfaces received a major update. SwiftUI 6 is becoming an increasingly mature tool, capable of replacing UIKit in most projects.

  • Adaptive Layout: New modifiers have been introduced for automatically adjusting the interface to screen size, orientation, and Dynamic Type without writing extra code.
  • New Animation API: Keyframe Animations and improved transition support have appeared. Now you can create complex animations with a timeline directly in a declarative style.
  • Swift Charts 2.0: The charting library now supports interactive elements: users can select data points, zoom in, and view tooltips.

Xcode 16: Productivity Tools

The Xcode integrated development environment also did not go unnoticed. The main innovations concerned speed and debugging.

  • Live Previews: SwiftUI previews now update almost instantly thanks to incremental compilation.
  • Intelligent Autocomplete: A new machine learning model (based on on-device ML) offers more accurate and context-aware suggestions when writing code.
  • Improved Debugger: Added support for viewing the state of coroutines (async/await) and real-time visualization of the dependency graph.

New Frameworks for iOS 18 and macOS 15

In addition to the language update, Apple introduced several frameworks that expand application capabilities:

  • App Intents: Developers can now integrate their apps more deeply with Siri and Shortcuts, adding complex multi-step actions.
  • TipKit: A ready-made framework for creating tooltips and onboarding
