Major Companies Are Switching to Rust: The Main Trend of 2025

2025 has become a turning point for the programming industry. Leading tech giants — Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta — are actively rewriting key components of their systems in Rust. This language, created at Mozilla, has finally emerged from the niche of an experimental tool and turned into a strategic standard for critical software.

Why Rust?

The main reason is memory safety. According to a Google report, about 70% of all critical vulnerabilities in Android and Chrome are related to memory handling errors in C and C++. Rust solves this problem at the compiler level without requiring a garbage collector. In 2025, the governments of the USA, EU, and UK issued joint recommendations urging a switch to memory-safe languages. Rust became the obvious choice.

Who Has Already Switched?

  • Microsoft: rewriting the Windows kernel and part of Azure in Rust. According to the company, this has reduced the number of vulnerabilities in components by 40%.
  • Google: Rust is used in Android (for new subsystems), Fuchsia OS, and the KataOS project. Chrome already has Rust modules in operation.
  • Amazon: Firecracker (micro-VM for AWS Lambda) and Bottlerocket (container OS) are entirely in Rust.
  • Meta: Rust is used in the infrastructure for managing social network graphs, as well as in the Mercurial version control system.
  • Cloudflare: the entire new network stack (Pingora) is written in Rust and handles 20% of global traffic.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

The job market reacts instantly. According to Stack Overflow 2025, Rust developer salaries have increased by 25% over the year and are now comparable to Go and Scala. Large companies are actively seeking engineers willing to retrain. The Rust community is releasing more and more educational materials, and integration with Python (via PyO3 and maturin) allows using Rust to speed up Python code without a complete rewrite.

Disadvantages and Challenges

  • Steep learning curve: the borrow checker and ownership require a new way of thinking.
  • Smaller library ecosystem compared to C++ or Python.
  • Compilation time remains an issue for large projects.

Nevertheless, the trend is obvious: Rust is becoming the de facto standard for systems programming, WebAssembly, embedded systems, and secure software. If you write in Python and want to stay in demand in 2025–2026, learning Rust is one of the best career investments.
