Benchmark 2025: Rust vs C++, Go, and Python — Who Leads in High-Load Systems?
In early 2025, the pythonlib.ru team conducted a series of benchmark tests to compare the performance of Rust with its main competitors: C++, Go, and Python. The goal is to determine how justified the transition to Rust is in high-load backend systems and data processing. The tests were performed on identical hardware (AMD Ryzen 9, 64 GB RAM, NVMe SSD) under a load simulating real-world tasks of web services and ETL processes.
Testing Methodology
We selected three key scenarios:
- CPU-bound: Fibonacci number calculation (recursion) and 1000x1000 matrix multiplication (50 iterations).
- Memory-bound: Working with hash tables (10 million inserts/reads).
- I/O-bound: Reading/writing 1 million rows from CSV + JSON parsing (100 MB file).
Results: Rust vs C++ (Execution Time, Seconds)
In CPU tasks, Rust showed results comparable to C++ (difference less than 3%). However, in tasks with intensive multi-threaded memory access, Rust outperformed C++ by 12% thanks to its strict ownership model, which eliminates data races at compile time. In I/O operations, the difference was minimal (2-4% in favor of C++).
Rust vs Go: Speed and Safety
Go is traditionally known for its lightweight concurrency (goroutines), but Rust with its async/await and tokio showed 40% higher throughput in HTTP servers (wrk test on 10k connections). In the memory leak test, Go consumed 25% more RAM than Rust due to its garbage collector. Rust also won in JSON parsing speed (2.1 times faster).
Rust vs Python: Order of Magnitude Difference
As expected, Rust surpassed Python (CPython 3.13) in all tests: from 15 times (I/O) to 50 times (pure computation). Even with PyPy and NumPy for matrix operations, Python lagged behind Rust by 5–8 times. The main takeaway: Python remains best for prototyping, but for production, Rust is the only choice.
Conclusions for Developers
- Rust vs C++: Rust is safer (no segfaults) and almost as fast. Recommended for new code.
- Rust vs Go: Rust is faster and more memory-efficient, but requires more development time. Go is for microservices where development speed is more important.
- Rust vs Python: Rust for the system core, Python for scripts and ML. The combination (PyO3, maturin) offers the best of both worlds.
