Rust is back on top: eighth year in a row as Language of the Year according to the StackOverflow survey

The annual StackOverflow developer survey is one of the most authoritative snapshots of opinions in the IT community. In 2024, over 65,000 programmers from 185 countries participated. And once again, for the eighth consecutive year, the first place in the "most loved language" category was taken by Rust.

Rust received 83% positive reviews from those who have worked with it. This is not just a statistic — it is a marker of deep satisfaction among developers who have chosen Rust for real projects.

Why is Rust so loved?

Rust is a systems programming language created at Mozilla Research. Its main features are memory safety without a garbage collector and extremely high performance, comparable to C and C++. But unlike its "older siblings," Rust guarantees protection against a whole class of errors (buffer overflow, data races) at the compilation stage.

  • Type-level safety — the Rust compiler checks memory ownership and reference lifetimes. This eliminates leaks and segmentation faults.
  • Speed — Rust compiles to native code and does not require a virtual machine. It is ideal for high-load systems, games, and embedded development.
  • Modern tooling — built-in package manager Cargo, build system, testing, and documentation "out of the box."
  • Growing ecosystem — libraries for the web (Actix, Rocket), CLI tools, parsing, machine learning, and even operating system development.

Where is Rust used?

The scope of Rust's application is rapidly expanding:

  • Infrastructure — popular tools are written in Rust: ripgrep, bat, fd, as well as part of the Firefox browser code (Servo).
  • Blockchain and cryptocurrencies — Solana, Polkadot, and other blockchain projects use Rust for its reliability.
  • Embedded systems — Rust is well-suited for IoT and microcontrollers due to its minimal runtime.
  • Data processing — libraries like Polars (a Rust alternative to Pandas) and Apache Arrow enable lightning-fast work with large data volumes.

Why is this important for Python developers?

Rust and Python are not competitors, but an excellent combination. Python handles rapid development and prototyping, while Rust handles the performance of critical code sections. Using PyO3 and maturin, you can write Python modules in Rust that speed up computations by 10–100 times. This is especially relevant for Data Science, ML inference, and web frameworks.

If you haven't tried Rust yet, now is a great time. The community is friendly, the documentation (The Book) is exemplary, and the demand for Rust developers is growing year by year. Start small: write a CLI utility or convert a bottleneck in your Python project into a Rust module.

Conclusion: Rust's leadership in the StackOverflow ranking is no accident. It is the result of thoughtful design, high performance, and a unique safety system. For the Python community, Rust is becoming not just "another language," but a powerful
