C++ burst into the top of the most loved programming languages according to StackOverflow

The annual StackOverflow 2024 developer survey brought an unexpected surprise: the C++ language, often considered complex and "low-level," confidently entered the list of the most loved programming languages among professional developers. This result forces a reconsideration of stereotypes and draws attention to the modern capabilities of the language.

Survey Data

StackOverflow surveyed over 65,000 developers worldwide. Among the key questions was: "Which programming language do you love the most?" The top three included:

  • Rust — 83% positive feedback
  • TypeScript — 73%
  • C++ — 69%

Interestingly, C++ surpassed Python (67%), Go (65%), and even C# (62%). This shows that developers who work with C++ truly appreciate its capabilities.

Why is C++ so loved?

Many will be surprised: after all, C++ is known for its complexity and abundance of pitfalls. However, modern C++ (standards C++17, C++20, and C++23) has been transformed. Here are the main reasons for developers' love:

  • Performance — C++ allows writing ultra-fast code without the overhead of virtual machines or garbage collectors.
  • Memory control — smart pointers, RAII, and move semantics provide flexibility in resource management without manual new/delete.
  • Modern features — concepts, coroutines, ranges, constexpr algorithms make code readable and safe.
  • Huge ecosystem — from game engines (Unreal Engine) to high-load servers and embedded systems.
  • Community — active committees, conferences (CppCon, Meeting C++) and high-quality documentation.

Who voted for C++?

StackOverflow analysts noted that C++ is especially popular among:

  • Game and graphics developers (55% of respondents in this category)
  • Systems programmers and OS developers
  • Specialists in high-frequency trading and financial systems
  • Engineers in robotics and IoT

What does this mean for the job market?

The high love rating for C++ is a signal for employers. The language remains in demand in high-load and mission-critical systems. The average salary of a C++ developer in the USA exceeds $150,000 per year, and in Russia — 250,000–400,000 rubles for senior specialists. Meanwhile, the number of vacancies is growing, especially in fintech, autonomous transport, and embedded fields.

Is it worth learning C++?

If you already know Python or Java, C++ can be an excellent addition. It will give you a deep understanding of how computers, memory, and algorithms work. And for those who want to enter game development, systems programming, or high-performance computing — C++ is practically mandatory.

The StackOverflow survey confirms: C++ is not just alive, it is thriving and continues to evolve. If it was once called "the language for the brave," now it is "the language for professionals who know what they want."
