The Go (Golang) Community Has Chosen the Best Libraries of the Year: 2024 Voting Results
The annual Go community vote for the best libraries and tools in the Golang ecosystem has concluded. This year, a record number of developers — over 3,800 people — participated in the survey organized by the popular resource GoTime and the official Golang blog. We have gathered the key winners in the main categories so you can update your tool stack for Go projects.
Winners in Key Categories
- Best Web Framework:
gin-gonic/gin— the perennial leader, receiving 34% of the votes. In second place isfiber(28%), and rounding out the top three isecho(15%). - Best HTTP Router:
chi— a lightweight router compatible withnet/http, surpassinggorilla/mux(which is being archived) andhttprouter. - Best ORM / Database Library:
gorm.io/gorm— maintains its position, butsqlc(generating type-safe code from SQL) andentfrom Facebook are getting closer. - Best Testing Framework:
stretchr/testify— the de facto standard for assertions and mocks. Second place goes togolang/mock, third togo-sqlmock. - Best CLI Framework:
spf13/cobra— the foundation of most modern Go utilities (from Kubernetes to Hugo). In second place isurfave/cli.
Surprises of the Year: New Names in the Top
Special attention was drawn to the "Best Configuration Library" category. Unexpectedly for many, caarlos0/env won — a minimalist library for parsing environment variables into structs. It surpassed the heavyweights viper and koanf.
In the "Best Logging Library" category, the community preferred rs/zerolog — for its speed and zero memory allocation. slog (the standard library) took only third place, indicating that developers value performance over standardization.
Go Ecosystem Trends 2024
Analysis of the voting results reveals several key trends:
- Moving away from "heavy" frameworks in favor of composite solutions: developers are increasingly assembling applications from small, independent libraries (router + validator + ORM) rather than using monolithic frameworks.
- Growing popularity of code generation: tools like
sqlcandoapi-codegen(generation from OpenAPI) show a twofold increase in votes compared to last year. - Ecosystem for WebAssembly: the
tinygo-org/tinygolibrary made it into the top 5 for the first time, signaling growing interest in running Go in the browser and on edge devices.
