Swift 6: The Major Changes That Will Turn the Apple Development World Upside Down

At the recent WWDC 2025, Apple officially announced the final version of Swift 6 — a new standard for the programming language for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. This is the biggest update in recent years, affecting both experienced developers and beginners. Let's break down the key innovations and their impact on everyday development.

1. Strict Ownership Model

The main "feature" of Swift 6 is the introduction of a strict ownership model, inspired by Rust and C++. Now the compiler will control when objects can be deallocated, without relying solely on ARC (Automatic Reference Counting). This solves the long-standing problem of cyclic references and makes code more predictable.

  • The `consume` keyword — allows you to explicitly transfer ownership of an object, avoiding copies.
  • New `borrowing` and `mutating` annotations — for precise control over data access.
  • Reduced number of crashes — thanks to static checking of object lifetimes at compile time.

2. Painless Asynchrony: Structured Concurrency 2.0

Swift 6 significantly expands support for asynchronous programming. New mechanisms for working with threads and actors have appeared, making code safer and easier to read.

  • Global Actors — you can now bind code execution to a specific thread (e.g., MainActor or the new BackgroundActor).
  • Improved error handling in async/await — added `discardableResult` for tasks and a new `try?` operator for optional errors.
  • Task Scheduling — the ability to manage task priorities and cancellation at a low level.

3. Integration with C++ and Swift for AI

Apple continues its course towards versatility. Swift 6 introduces bidirectional interoperability with C++: you can now call functions from C++ libraries directly, without Objective-C wrappers. This opens access to a huge body of legacy code and high-performance libraries.

Additionally, Swift 6 includes native support for tensors and machine learning operations through the updated MLX (Machine Learning eXtensions) framework. Now writing neural networks for iOS is as easy as in Python.

4. Developer Tools

  • Swift Testing Framework — a replacement for XCTest. Faster, with support for parameterized tests and snapshot testing.
  • New REPL — an interactive environment with real-time error highlighting.
  • Swift DocC 2.0 — automatic documentation generation with support for diagrams and code examples.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

Swift 6 is not just an evolutionary update. It is a step towards a systems-level language that remains accessible. Developers will need to rethink their approach to memory management and asynchrony, but in return, they will get more reliable and faster code. For those working with AI and C++, entirely new horizons are opening up.

The update is already available in Xcode 16 and Swift Playgrounds 5. We recommend starting project migration as soon as possible, especially if you
