Java 2025 Study Plan: Where to Start and How Not to Get Lost in a Sea of Technologies

Java remains one of the most in-demand languages in enterprise development, Android, and backend systems. In 2025, the demand for Java developers is not falling — on the contrary, the market requires specialists familiar with modern trends: cloud solutions, microservices, and AI integrations. But where should a beginner start? We have prepared an up-to-date study plan that will help you go from zero to your first commercial project.

Stage 1: Foundation — Java Core (1-2 months)

Without a solid base, moving forward is pointless. Start by installing the JDK (the latest LTS version is JDK 21) and IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition. You will need to master:

  • Data types, variables, and operators;
  • Conditional constructs and loops (if, for, while);
  • Arrays and strings (String, StringBuilder);
  • OOP basics: classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation;
  • Interfaces and abstract classes;
  • Exceptions (try-catch-finally, custom exceptions);
  • Collections: List, Set, Map, Queue and their implementations;
  • Working with files (I/O, NIO).

Resources: the book "Thinking in Java" by Bruce Eckel, the course "Java Level 1" on JavaRush, the playlist "Java for Beginners" by Gosha Dudar on YouTube.

Stage 2: Tools and Practice (2-3 weeks)

Now you need to automate the build and get acquainted with version control systems:

  • Git and GitHub (basic commands, working with branches);
  • Maven or Gradle (dependency management, project build);
  • JUnit 5 (writing unit tests).

In parallel, start solving problems on Codewars or LeetCode — this will improve your algorithmic thinking.

Stage 3: Databases and SQL (2-3 weeks)

Almost any Java application works with data. Learn:

  • SQL basics (SELECT, JOIN, GROUP BY, subqueries);
  • JDBC (connecting to a database, executing queries);
  • Hibernate or Spring Data JPA basics (at the CRUD level).

Tip: install PostgreSQL or H2 and write a simple console application — a "Notebook" with database storage.

Stage 4: Spring Boot — Entering the Enterprise (1-2 months)

Spring is the industry standard. In 2025, it's important to learn Spring Boot 3.x right away. Your minimum:

  • Creating REST APIs (@RestController, @RequestMapping);
  • Dependency injection (IoC/DI);
  • Working with databases via Spring Data JPA;
  • Error handling and validation;
  • Security basics (Spring Security: authentication, JWT).

Portfolio project: "Microblog" — registration, creating posts, news feed, comments.

Stage 5: Modern Trends 2025

To stand out among candidates, add to your resume:

  • Docker and Docker Compose (containerization
