Rust Development Roadmap for 2025-2026: What Does the Future Hold?

The Rust Foundation and Core Team have published an ambitious plan for the language's development in 2025-2026. The main goal is to make Rust even faster, safer, and more convenient for industrial development. We've gathered the key directions that will emerge over the next two years.

Main Roadmap Goals

  • Faster compilation. Incremental compilation for large projects is planned, along with optimization of the LLVM backend. Build time reduction of up to 40% is expected.
  • Improved async/await. The introduction of async iterators and support for "async closures" will simplify writing concurrent code.
  • Type-safe generics. Expansion of the type system: stabilization of GAT (Generic Associated Types) and introduction of const generics for working with fixed-size arrays.
  • Tools for embedded and WASM. Improved support for microcontrollers (Cortex-M, RISC-V) and WebAssembly — reducing binary size and speeding up loading.

Key Innovations of 2025

In 2025, several long-awaited features are expected to be stabilized:

  • Pattern matching with guards. The ability to add conditions to match expressions — like in Haskell or Scala.
  • Lazy iterators by default. The standard library will receive methods that return lazy sequences to save memory.
  • Improved borrow checker. New borrowing resolution rules (NLL 2.0) will reduce the number of false errors.

Plans for 2026

The next stage of Rust development includes more global changes:

  • Async traits. The ability to define async methods in traits — a key feature for web frameworks and drivers.
  • Modular standard library. Splitting std into several crates (core, alloc, std) to reduce the size of the final binary.
  • SIMD support in the stable version. CPU vector instructions will become available without unsafe code.
  • Integration with C++. Improved compatibility with C++ through CXX-like macros and automatic binding generation.

How Will This Affect Developers?

The updates will make Rust more attractive for web development, game development, and systems programming. Faster compilation will lower the entry barrier for beginners, and improved asynchrony will enable the creation of high-load services.
