PHP Learning Plan 2025: Where to Start Learning the Language
PHP remains one of the most in-demand languages for web development: it powers WordPress, Laravel, Symfony, and over 75% of websites with a server-side component. If you've decided to master PHP in 2025, we have prepared a structured learning plan to help you progress from a beginner to a confident developer.
Stage 1. Basics of Syntax and Logic (1–2 weeks)
Start with the fundamental constructs of the language. Moving forward without this stage is a waste of time.
- Variables, data types (string, int, float, bool, array)
- Conditional operators (if, else, switch)
- Loops (for, while, foreach)
- Functions: declaration, arguments, return values
- Working with strings and arrays (built-in functions)
Tip: Install a local server (OpenServer, XAMPP, or MAMP) — this is the environment where you will run scripts. Write code in a simple editor (VS Code or PhpStorm).
Stage 2. Working with Forms, HTTP, and Databases (2–3 weeks)
PHP is a language for the web, so it's important to understand how it interacts with the browser and stores data.
- GET and POST methods, superglobal arrays $_GET, $_POST, $_SERVER
- Working with sessions and cookies
- Connecting to MySQL via mysqli and PDO
- CRUD operations: create, read, update, delete records
- SQL injections and security (escaping, prepared statements)
Practice: Write a simple user registration and login form with data storage in a database.
Stage 3. OOP and Architecture (2–3 weeks)
Object-oriented programming is the standard of modern PHP.
- Classes, objects, properties, methods
- Inheritance, interfaces, traits
- Namespaces and autoloading (composer autoload)
- Exceptions (try-catch)
- Patterns: Singleton, Factory, Repository (at a basic level)
Important: Learn to work with Composer — the PHP package manager. You will need it in the next stage.
Stage 4. Framework and Tools (3–4 weeks)
In 2025, you can't go anywhere without a framework. Choose one of the two leaders:
- Laravel — the most popular, convenient, and ecosystem-rich (Eloquent ORM, Blade, Artisan)
- Symfony — more strict, but provides a deep understanding of architecture
Additionally, study: REST API, migrations, validation, middleware, testing (PHPUnit).
Stage 5. Projects and Portfolio (ongoing)
Theory without practice is forgotten. Build 2–3 projects for your portfolio:
- A blog or news site on Laravel
- An API for an online store (products, cart, orders)
- An admin panel with authentication and roles
