Java entered the top of the most loved programming languages according to StackOverflow 2024

The annual StackOverflow 2024 developer survey brought unexpected but pleasant news for Java fans. Despite the emergence of many new languages and frameworks, the classic language of enterprise development not only maintained its position but also entered the top three most loved programming languages among professional developers.

According to the survey data, which involved over 65,000 developers from around the world, Java took an honorable second place in terms of "love" among programmers, second only to Rust. At the same time, Java significantly outpaced popular competitors such as Python, TypeScript, and Go.

Why does Java remain a loved language?

Experts highlight several key factors that ensure Java receives such high praise from developers:

  • Reliability and stability. Java has been used for decades in mission-critical systems — from banking applications to large enterprise solutions. Developers value the predictability of code behavior.
  • Modern features. Despite its age, Java is actively evolving. New versions with improvements are released every six months: lambda expressions, modular system, pattern matching, and virtual threads (Project Loom).
  • Huge community. Java has one of the largest and most active developer communities. This means thousands of ready-made libraries, frameworks (Spring, Hibernate), and tons of quality documentation.
  • Cross-platform capability. The principle "Write Once, Run Anywhere" remains relevant today. Java applications run on any device with a JVM.
  • Career prospects. Java developers traditionally rank among the highest-paid specialists in the market.

What do the numbers say?

According to the StackOverflow 2024 survey, Java showed impressive results:

  • More than 30% of professional developers named Java their favorite language.
  • The language took second place in "love" among all respondents — both professional developers and those just learning to code.
  • Java maintains its leadership in the category "languages people want to work with" among developers over 25 years old.

What does this mean for beginners?

For those just starting their journey in programming, Java's entry into the top loved languages is an excellent signal. This means learning Java is not just a tribute to tradition, but an investment in the future. The language is actively developing, the community supports beginners, and there are still a huge number of job openings for Java developers.

If you want to join the millions of developers who love Java, start with the basics: syntax, OOP, collections, working with databases. Then move on to learning popular frameworks — Spring Boot, Hibernate, and you will surely find your place in the world of Java development.
