Benchmark 2025: Rust vs competitors — who sets the pace in systems programming?

In 2025, the Rust programming language continues to strengthen its position as one of the fastest and safest tools for developing high-load systems. Recently published results of cross-language benchmarks (Computer Language Benchmarks Game and internal tests of major tech companies) have shown that Rust not only catches up with, but in a number of scenarios surpasses recognized veterans — C++, Go, and even partially Python with its JIT compilers.

We analyzed data from the first quarter of 2025 and compiled the key findings.

Execution speed: Rust vs C++ vs Go

Traditionally, C++ was considered unmatched in tasks where every microsecond is critical. However, in 2025, Rust demonstrates nearly identical performance in CPU-intensive computations — the difference rarely exceeds 2–5% in favor of C++. At the same time, Rust wins due to zero-cost abstractions and the absence of a need for manual memory management.

  • String and JSON processing: Rust is 10–15% faster than C++ thanks to optimized parsers (serde, simd-json).
  • Multithreading: Rust outperforms Go by 30–40% in memory-intensive tasks — the ownership model eliminates data races without a garbage collector.
  • Go: Loses to Rust by 2–3 times on computational benchmarks, but remains a leader in development speed and ease of deployment.

Memory consumption and security

In 2025, Rust has strengthened its reputation as a language with a minimal footprint. In tests on web servers (actix-web vs net/http in Go), Rust consumes 2–3 times less RAM under the same load. C++ in skilled hands can be equally economical, but Rust guarantees this at the compiler level.

Memory safety is Rust's main trump card. According to the Google Project Zero report for 2024–2025, 70% of critical vulnerabilities in C/C++ projects are related to memory. Rust eliminates this class of errors statically, making it the number one choice for real-time systems, IoT, and cryptography.

Ecosystem and development speed

Rust's main trade-off is compilation time. In 2025, the situation has improved: incremental builds via cargo have become 20% faster, but full compilation of large projects still lags behind Go. Nevertheless, the crates.io package manager already contains over 150,000 packages, and tools like rust-analyzer and clippy make development comfortable.

Python: an unexpected competitor?

With the advent of PyPy 3.10 and new JIT compilers, Python can compete with Rust in narrow scenarios (e.g., HTML parsing), but loses by 10–50 times in pure performance. Rust is becoming the standard for Python extensions — libraries like polars and tokenizers are written in Rust and provide a speed increase of 5–20 times.
