PHP in 2025: Not Just Alive, but Back in the Game

In a world where a new JavaScript framework is born every day and Python is conquering data science, PHP continues to hold its ground. And not just hold its ground — PHP 8.x has given the language a second wind. In 2025, PHP is not a "legacy dumpster," but a modern, strictly typed tool powering 77% of all websites on the internet. If you want to become a backend developer, learning PHP is one of the most pragmatic investments of your time.

We have compiled a PHP roadmap for 2025 that will take you from your first line of code to a confident Junior / Middle developer. No fluff — only what you really need to learn, and in the right order.

Stage 1: Foundation — Syntax and Basic Concepts

You cannot skip this stage. Even if you already know another language, modern PHP has its own specifics. Start with PHP 8.3 — the latest stable version as of early 2025.

What you need to master:

  • Variables, data types (int, string, float, bool, null, array).
  • Conditional operators (if, switch, match).
  • Loops (for, foreach, while).
  • Functions: declaration, arguments, return types.
  • Working with arrays: array_map, array_filter, array_reduce.
  • OOP basics: classes, objects, inheritance, interfaces, traits.

Code example: Modern PHP 8.3

<?php

declare(strict_types=1);

// Using named arguments and match expressionfunction calculatePrice(float $base, string $category, bool $isPremium = false): float{ $discount = match ($category) { 'electronics' => 0.1, 'clothing' => 0.2, 'food' => 0.05, default => 0.0, };

$price = $base * (1 - $discount); return $isPremium ? $price * 1.25 : $price;}

$final = calculatePrice( base: 1000.0, category: 'electronics', isPremium: true);

echo "Final price: {$final}"; // 1125.0

Tip: Get used to writing declare(strict_types=1) right away — it will save you from a ton of bugs.

Stage 2: Tooling — Indispensable

Pure PHP is great, but in real work you will use tools. This is a mandatory block for learning PHP in 2025.

Composer — Dependency Manager

Install Composer, learn to create composer.json, and add libraries (e.g., guzzlehttp/guzzle for HTTP requests).

composer require guzzlehttp/guzzle

Git — Version Control System

Basic set of commands: git init, git add, git commit, git push, working with branches and merge. Without Git, you are not a developer.

IDE / Editor

PHPStorm — the industry standard (paid but powerful). VS Code with plugins (PHP Intelephense) — a free alternative.

Stage 3: Databases and SQL

PHP rarely works without a database. In 2025, the standard is MySQL / MariaDB and PostgreSQL. Learn to write queries, not just use an ORM.

What to learn:

  • CRUD: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE.
  • JOINs, subqueries, indexes.
  • Data normalization (at least up to 3NF).
  • PDO — secure database interaction from PHP (protection against SQL injection).

Example: PDO with prepared statements

<?php

$dsn = 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=shop;charset=utf8mb4';$pdo = new PDO($dsn, 'user', 'password', [ PDO::ATTR_ERRMODE => PDO::ERRMODE_EXCEPTION, PDO::ATTR_DEFAULT_FETCH_MODE => PDO::FETCH_ASSOC,]);

$stmt = $pdo->prepare('SELECT * FROM products WHERE price > :min_price');$stmt->execute(['min_price' => 500]);$products = $stmt->fetchAll();

foreach ($products as $product) { echo
