PHP for Machine Learning: Reality or Myth?

When it comes to machine learning (ML), the first languages that come to mind are Python, R, or Julia. PHP, traditionally associated with web development and backend, seems like an unsuitable candidate for data science tasks. However, with the growing popularity of ML and the emergence of specialized libraries, PHP has begun to gradually enter this field. In this article, we will examine how suitable PHP is for machine learning, what tools exist, and where its use is justified, and where it is not.

Main Libraries for Machine Learning in PHP

Despite the fact that the PHP ecosystem for ML is significantly inferior to Python, there are several mature libraries that allow solving basic tasks. Let's look at the two most popular ones.

PHP-ML (PHP Machine Learning)

This is the first and most well-known library for machine learning in PHP. It provides a wide set of algorithms and tools for classification, regression, clustering, and data preprocessing.

Main features of PHP-ML:

  • Classification: Naive Bayes, SVM (Support Vector Machine), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN).
  • Regression: Linear Regression, Least Squares.
  • Clustering: K-Means, DBSCAN.
  • Evaluation Metrics: Accuracy, Confusion Matrix, F1 Score.
  • Working with neural networks (experimental support).

Example: Fisher's Iris Classification using KNN

<?phprequire_once __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';

use Phpml\\Classification\\KNearestNeighbors;use Phpml\\Dataset\\Demo\\IrisDataset;

// Load the demo dataset$dataset = new IrisDataset();$samples = $dataset->getSamples();$labels = $dataset->getTargets();

// Create and train the classifier (K=3)$classifier = new KNearestNeighbors(3);$classifier->train($samples, $labels);

// Prediction for a new sample (sepal length, sepal width, petal length, petal width)$newSample = [5.1, 3.5, 1.4, 0.2];$predicted = $classifier->predict($newSample);

echo "Predicted class: " . $predicted; // Will output: Iris-setosa?>

Rubix ML

A more modern and powerful library that positions itself as a "machine learning framework for PHP". Rubix ML supports a complete pipeline: from data loading to model deployment. It uses an object-oriented approach and has built-in support for neural networks.

Key features of Rubix ML:

  • Extensive set of algorithms: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Gradient Boost, MLP (Multilayer Perceptron).
  • Working with categorical data (One Hot Encoder).
  • Cross-validation and hyperparameter tuning.
  • Saving and loading trained models.

Example: Linear Regression with Rubix ML

<?phprequire_once __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';

use Rubix\\ML\\Regressors\\Ridge;use Rubix\\ML\\Datasets\\Labeled;use Rubix\\ML\\CrossValidation\\Metrics\\RMSE;

// Data preparation (X - house area, y - price)$samples = [[800], [1200], [1500], [2000], [2500]];$labels = [150000, 210000, 250000, 320000, 400000];

$dataset = new Labeled($samples, $labels);

// Create and train the Ridge regression model$estimator = new Ridge(1.0);$estimator->train($dataset);

// Prediction$newHouse = [[1800]];$predictedPrice = $estimator->predict($newHouse);

echo "Predicted price: $" . number_format($predictedPrice[0], 2);// Will output: Predicted price: $289,000.00 (approximately)?>

Strengths of PHP in the Context of ML

Although PHP is not a language for data science, it has several advantages that can be useful in certain scenarios:
