How to Get a Job as a JavaScript Developer: Tips and Resume

The IT job market continues to grow, and JavaScript (especially on the Node.js platform) remains one of the most in-demand languages. However, simply knowing how to write code is not enough — you need to present yourself competently to the employer. In this article, we will break down a step-by-step plan: from compiling a resume to successfully passing an interview.

1. Building a Portfolio: What a Junior Node.js Developer Should Know

Before sending out your resume, make sure your technical background meets market expectations. For a Junior/Middle Node.js developer position, the basic set looks like this:

  • JavaScript Language (ES6+): closures, promises, async/await, modules (CommonJS and ESM).
  • Node.js: working with the file system (fs), streams (stream), HTTP server, working with processes.
  • Frameworks: Express.js or Fastify (basic REST API).
  • Databases: MongoDB (Mongoose) or PostgreSQL (Sequelize, Knex).
  • Tools: Git, npm/yarn, Postman, basic Docker.

Example of a simple REST API on Express.js:

const express = require('express');const app = express();const PORT = process.env.PORT || 3000;

app.use(express.json());

// Simple route for testingapp.get('/api/health', (req, res) => { res.json({ status: 'OK', timestamp: new Date().toISOString() });});

// Example CRUD (database simulation)let users = [{ id: 1, name: 'Alexey' }];

app.get('/api/users', (req, res) => { res.json(users);});

app.post('/api/users', (req, res) => { const newUser = { id: users.length + 1, name: req.body.name }; users.push(newUser); res.status(201).json(newUser);});

app.listen(PORT, () => { console.log(`Server running on port ${PORT}`);});

Place 2-3 such projects on GitHub — this will become the foundation of your portfolio.

2. Compiling a Resume: Structure and Key Points

A resume is your business card. HR specialists spend an average of 6-10 seconds reviewing it. Therefore, the structure should be clear:

  • Header: Name, city, phone, email, link to LinkedIn/GitHub.
  • Brief Description (Summary): 2-3 sentences about your stack and goals. Example: "Junior Node.js developer with experience creating REST APIs using Express.js and MongoDB. I aim to develop in the direction of microservice architecture and DevOps."
  • Skills (Hard Skills): List of technologies, grouped by category. For example:
    • Languages: JavaScript (ES6+), TypeScript (basic)
    • Backend: Node.js, Express.js, REST API
    • Databases: MongoDB, PostgreSQL
    • Tools: Git, Docker, Postman
  • Work Experience (or pet projects): Describe 2-3 projects. Use the formula: "Task — Action — Result".
  • Education: Courses, university, online schools.

Tip: Do not write "Sociable, responsible." Instead, demonstrate this through projects: "Participated in the team development of a Telegram bot for order automation (Git, Trello, daily standups)."

3. Where to Find Vacancies and How to Pass an Interview

Job searching for a Node.js developer includes several channels:
