What Is a Django Server
Django is one of the most popular frameworks for building web applications in Python. It enables rapid development of reliable, scalable web projects thanks to its rich feature set and ease of use.
The built-in Django development server is designed specifically for local development and testing. It's a lightweight HTTP server that's perfect for debugging and development. Keep in mind that this server is not intended for production environments.
Benefits of the Built-in Django Server
The development server offers developers a range of convenient features:
• Quick startup with no extra configuration needed • Automatic project reload when code changes (debug mode) • Clear error output directly in the console • Instant browser updates • Beginner-friendly simplicity
Preparing to Run Your Django Server
Installing Django
If Django isn't installed on your system yet, use the pip package manager to install it:
pip install django
To verify the installation and check the Django version, run:
python -m django --version
Creating a New Django Project
Navigate to the directory where you want your project to live. Then create a new project with this command:
django-admin startproject myproject
After creating the project, move into its folder:
cd myproject
The project structure will include key configuration files like settings.py and manage.py, which you'll need to run the server.
Basic Django Server Startup
Standard Server Launch
To start the development server, run the following command from your project's root directory:
python manage.py runserver
Once the server starts successfully, you'll see this message in the console:
Watching for file changes with StatReloader
Performing system checks...
System check identified no issues (0 silenced).
Starting development server at http://127.0.0.1:8000/
Open your web browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:8000/. If everything is set up correctly, you'll see the Django welcome page confirming a successful launch.
Configuring Port and IP Address
By default, the Django server runs on port 8000 and IP address 127.0.0.1 (localhost). However, you can change these settings to suit your needs.
To run the server on a different port, use:
python manage.py runserver 8080
To make the server accessible from any IP address on your device, specify:
python manage.py runserver 0.0.0.0:8080
This allows other devices on your local network to access the server.
Debug Mode and Its Features
Enabling Debug Mode
Debug mode activates automatically when you set DEBUG = True in your settings.py file. This mode gives developers extra tools for efficient debugging.
What Debug Mode Offers
With debug mode enabled, you get:
• Detailed error messages showing the exact line of code • Automatic server reload when project files change • In-depth request and response information • The ability to inspect variables at the moment an error occurs
