What is the purpose of __slots__ in Python?

For the standard implementation of the Python interpreter, i.e. CPython, the following is true:

To find the number of occurrences of a pattern in a string, the count method is used. Since count returns the number of non-overlapping occurrences of a substring in a string, the complexity of the Boyer-Moore algorithm will be O(n + m), where n + m is the sum of the lengths of the string and the pattern.

I am not very familiar with the structure of the CPython source code, but it very much seems that the count method is indeed described in the file referenced. The function described in it contains a single call — a call to the FASTSEARCH function, the description of which I found in the file, which contains a variant of the Boyer-Moore algorithm.
