What is Carbon and why is it needed?
Carbon is a powerful and elegant library for PHP that extends the built-in DateTime class. If you have ever worked with dates in PHP natively, you know that the standard DateTime and DateTimeImmutable provide basic functionality, but their API is often cumbersome and unintuitive. Carbon solves this problem by offering a clean, readable, and expressive syntax for working with dates and times.
Why use Carbon? Imagine you need to:
- Add 3 days to the current date:
$date->add(new DateInterval('P3D'))(native PHP) vs$date->addDays(3)(Carbon). - Get the difference in days between two dates: the cumbersome
DateTime::diff()with subsequent formatting vs$date1->diffInDays($date2). - Check if a date is a weekend: writing your own logic vs
$date->isWeekend().
Carbon makes code not only shorter, but also significantly clearer. It is widely used in modern PHP frameworks such as Laravel (where it is the standard), Symfony, Yii, and others. The library is fully compatible with native DateTime, meaning you can use Carbon anywhere a DateTime is expected.
Key advantages of Carbon:
- Expressive syntax: methods are named so that their purpose is clear without comments (
startOfDay(),endOfMonth(),isFuture()). - Immutability: support for
CarbonImmutablefor safe date manipulation without side effects. - Localization: built-in support for formatting dates in different languages.
- Rich API: hundreds of methods for manipulating, comparing, formatting, and calculating dates.
- Intuitive comparison: methods like
isBefore(),isAfter(),isSameDay().
Installing Carbon
Carbon is installed via Composer, the standard package manager for PHP. If you don't have Composer yet, you need to install it (see getcomposer.org).
Open a terminal in the root of your project and run the command:
composer require nesbot/carbonAfter successful installation, a vendor/ folder and a composer.json file with the added dependency will appear in your project. To use Carbon in your code, you need to include the Composer autoloader:
<?phprequire_once 'vendor/autoload.php';
use Carbon\\Carbon;
// Now you can use Carbonecho Carbon::now(); // 2025-04-03 15:30:00?>Important: Carbon requires PHP version 8.0 or higher (for the latest versions). PHP 8.1+ is recommended.
Quick Start with a Code Example
Let's jump straight into practice. Here are a few simple examples that demonstrate the power of Carbon:
<?phprequire_once 'vendor/autoload.php';use Carbon\\Carbon;
// Current date and time$now = Carbon::now();echo "Now: " . $now . ""; // 2025-04-03 15:30:00
// Creating a date from a string$birthday = Carbon::createFromDate(1990, 5, 15);echo "Birthday: " . $birthday->format('d.m.Y') . ""; // 15.05.1990
// Date manipulation$tomorrow = Carbon::tomorrow();echo "Tomorrow: " . $tomorrow . "";
$nextWeek = Carbon::now()->addWeek();echo "In a week: " . $nextWeek . "";
// Difference between dates$age = $birthday->diffInYears(Carbon::now());echo "Age: $age years"; // 34 or 35
// Condition checking$date = Carbon::parse('2025-12-25');if ($date->isChristmas()) { echo "It's Christmas!";}
//
