Survey: Which TypeScript Frameworks Are Used in Production
TypeScript is confidently taking over backend and frontend: according to State of JS 2024, almost 70% of developers use it in commercial projects. But which frameworks actually make it to production, rather than staying at the prototype stage? We analyzed a recent survey of 1200 developers to find out the real distribution of popular tools.
Survey Methodology
The survey was conducted in January 2025 among members of TypeScript and Node.js communities (Telegram chats, Reddit, GitHub Discussions). The selection criterion was using TypeScript in projects running on production servers. Participants could select multiple frameworks if a stack was used in the project.
Top 5 TypeScript Frameworks for Production
- Next.js (42%) — the leader as a full-stack framework. React + SSR/SSG, built-in API routes, and support for React Server Components make it the #1 choice for SaaS, marketplaces, and enterprise portals.
- NestJS (28%) — dominates the backend: modular architecture, decorators, built-in validation, and GraphQL integration. Used in microservice architectures and enterprise solutions.
- Express + TypeScript (18%) — classic Node.js adapted for static typing. Most often used in small API services and legacy projects where they don't want to change the stack.
- Remix (7%) — gaining momentum thanks to its focus on web standards and excellent performance. Popular among developers migrating from CRA or Gatsby.
- Deno Fresh (5%) — an experimental framework for Deno, attracting enthusiasts with its minimalism and server-side rendering without client-side JS.
Trends and Surprising Discoveries
Interestingly, SvelteKit with TypeScript was noted by only 3% of respondents — it is more often used in personal projects than in production. And Fastify (2%) even surpassed Koa — it is chosen for high-load systems due to its speed and built-in validation schema.
Also, 15% of respondents stated that they use custom wrappers over Express or Fastify — this is a trend towards customization for the needs of a specific company.
Why This Matters for Developers
The choice of framework directly affects development speed, maintenance, and hiring. If you are learning TypeScript for commercial development, focus on Next.js (full-stack) and NestJS (backend). For lightweight APIs — Express or Fastify with TypeScript configuration.
