New Go (Golang) Release: What Changed in Version 1.23

The developer community has welcomed the long-awaited Go 1.23 release — another milestone in the evolution of one of the most popular programming languages for server-side and high-load systems. The Go development team has traditionally focused on improving performance, enhancing usability, and fixing bugs. Let's break down the key changes.

Main Innovations

  • Iterators and the iter package. In Go 1.23, experimental iterator support has become stable. A new package iter has appeared, providing basic types for working with sequences. This makes code more concise and safer when traversing collections.
  • Improved compiler performance. Work with int and uint types on 64-bit architectures has been optimized. In some scenarios, performance has increased by up to 3–5% without changing the source code.
  • Update to the for-range loop. Variables declared inside for-range are now correctly captured in closures. This fixes the classic "gotcha" for beginners where all iterations received the last value.
  • New govulncheck analyzer. The built-in vulnerability search tool can now analyze not only binary files but also source code, helping to find vulnerable dependencies before building.
  • Testing improvements. The testing package now supports testing.Synctest for synchronizing goroutines in tests, simplifying the debugging of multithreaded code.

Technical Details

Changes in memory management deserve special attention. In Go 1.23, the garbage collector has become even "quieter" — the stop-the-world time during collection has been reduced. This is especially important for real-time systems and microservices with strict latency requirements.

Also worth noting is the standard library update: the crypto/tls function for automatic selection of TLS 1.3 version has been added, and the net/http package now supports HTTP/2 server push through the new http.Pusher interface.

How to Update?

To switch to the new version, simply run:

  • go install golang.org/dl/go1.23.0@latest — to download the new version;
  • go1.23.0 download — to install;
  • or update Go via the official installer at go.dev.

Be sure to check the compatibility of your projects: Go 1.23 is backward compatible with previous versions, but new features (iterators) may require a minimum go 1.23 version in go.mod.

What's Next?

The Go 1.23 release confirms the development team's course towards stability and pragmatism. The language continues to expand capabilities for working with concurrency and simplifying the writing of complex server systems. If you work with microservices, network protocols, or distributed computing — the update is definitely worth your attention.
