New Java Release: Key Changes for Developers

The developer community has received another major update to the Java platform. The new release, which is already available for download and use in production environments, brings a number of long-awaited improvements. Although the exact version (e.g., JDK 21 or 22) may vary depending on the release date, the key innovations remain unchanged: a focus on performance, simplification of multithreading, and expansion of language capabilities.

In this overview, we will analyze the most important changes that will directly impact the daily work of Java developers.

Key Innovations

  • Virtual Threads promoted to final status. This is no longer a Preview feature but a fully-fledged part of the platform. Virtual Threads allow creating millions of lightweight threads, radically simplifying the writing of high-load server applications without complex asynchronous logic.
  • Pattern Matching for switch (final version). The switch statement has become even more expressive. You can now check object types directly in case blocks without cumbersome instanceof constructs. This makes code cleaner and safer.
  • Record Patterns. Allow decomposing record objects directly in patterns. Combined with pattern matching in switch, this provides a very concise and powerful syntax for working with data.
  • String handling improvements. New methods have been added for working with strings and StringBuilder, optimizing concatenation and formatting in high-load code sections.
  • JVM security and performance updates. Engineers from Oracle and the OpenJDK community have worked on optimizing the G1 and ZGC garbage collectors. A reduction in pauses of 10-15% is expected in scenarios with large memory heaps.

What Does This Mean for Developers?

The main trend of recent Java releases is lowering the barrier to entry for reactive and concurrent programming. Virtual Threads allow writing sequential code that scales as well as asynchronous code. This is especially important for microservice architecture and REST APIs.

Pattern Matching and Record Patterns significantly reduce the amount of boilerplate code. Developers no longer need to write long if-else chains for type checking — switch does it on its own. This reduces the risk of errors and improves readability.

How to Update?

The update is recommended for everyone using LTS (Long-Term Support) versions. Developers on Java 17 should consider migration, as the new release offers significant performance improvements "out of the box" without changing the application's business logic.

You can download the latest version from the official Oracle website or through open-source builds (OpenJDK, Adoptium).
