TypeScript is back on top: StackOverflow 2024 survey results

StackOverflow's annual developer survey has once again confirmed TypeScript's status as one of the most loved programming languages. In 2024, TypeScript confidently took 2nd place in the "Most Loved, Dreaded & Wanted Languages" category, second only to Rust. Over 65,000 developers worldwide participated in the survey, and TypeScript received high marks for convenience, performance, and ecosystem.

Why is TypeScript so popular?

TypeScript is a strictly typed superset of JavaScript that brings static typing to web development. Here are the key reasons for its success:

  • Code safety — static typing allows catching errors at compile time rather than during execution.
  • Better IDE support — autocompletion, refactoring, and navigation work flawlessly.
  • Compatibility with JavaScript — TS compiles to pure JS, so it works everywhere JS works.
  • Active community — Microsoft and thousands of contributors are constantly improving the language.
  • JavaScript ecosystem — access to npm, React, Vue, Angular, and all JS libraries.

TypeScript growth in numbers

According to StackOverflow 2024, TypeScript is used by 38.5% of respondents (the fifth most popular language). Moreover, among those who have tried it, over 70% want to continue using it in the future. TS is also in the top 3 highest-paying languages — the average salary for a TypeScript developer is about $80,000 per year.

TypeScript and Python: common ground

Although TypeScript and Python are different languages, they share common features:

  • Strict typing — Python, with type annotations (PEP 484), is also moving toward typing.
  • Versatility — Python for backend and science, TS for frontend and full-stack.
  • Popularity on the web — Python (Django, FastAPI) and TS (React, Node.js) are often used together in modern projects.
  • Tools — both languages have rich ecosystems of packages and tools.

If you write in Python and want to learn frontend, TypeScript is a logical choice. Many developers use the Python + TypeScript combination to build a full stack: backend in Python and frontend in TypeScript.

What's next?

Experts predict further growth for TypeScript in 2024–2025. Microsoft is actively developing the language, adding new features (decorators, improved module support, performance optimizations). TypeScript has already become the standard for large projects — from Angular to Deno and VSCode itself.

If you haven't tried TypeScript yet, now is a great time to start. On PythonLib you will find materials on both Python and TypeScript — two languages that perfectly complement each other in modern web development.
