Swift in 2025-2026: Key Directions for Language Development
The Apple developer community eagerly awaits new versions of Swift — the primary language for creating applications for iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. Based on official Apple announcements and proposals from the swift-evolution repository, we have compiled the main development vectors for Swift over the next two years.
Major Innovations in Swift 6 (2025)
The release of Swift 6, scheduled for the end of 2025, will be the most significant update. The main focus is full implementation of the Strict Concurrency model.
- Data-race safety by default — the compiler will start issuing errors for all potential data races. Developers will have to explicitly specify boundaries for
Sendabletypes and use actors. - Improved actors — global actors with inheritance capabilities will appear, simplifying work with shared resources.
- Non-copyable types — finalizing support for types that cannot be copied (e.g., unique file descriptors). This will improve performance and safety.
- New type system — expanding capabilities for generic programming (GATs — Generic Associated Types).
Ecosystem and Cross-Platform Support
Apple is actively promoting Swift beyond its own platforms. In 2025-2026, the following is expected:
- Swift on Android — the project to port the standard library and tools for Android will exit beta. It is already possible to write business logic in Swift for Android applications.
- WASM support — full compilation to WebAssembly for server and web applications.
- Improvements to Swift Package Manager — plugins for code generation and support for binary dependencies with module stability will appear.
SwiftUI and Visual Development
The SwiftUI framework will receive a long-awaited update:
- Observable macros — a new way to manage state without @StateObject/@ObservedObject. The
@Observablemacro automatically generates view updates. - Multi-column tables — native support for complex tables on iPad and macOS.
- GPU animations — rendering of key animations will be offloaded to the graphics processor for smooth 120 fps.
Integration with AI/ML
Following the announcement of Apple Intelligence, Swift will receive:
- Native bindings to Core ML — simplified invocation of machine learning models.
- LLM support — libraries for working with large language models on the device.
- Swift for ML — an experimental framework for writing neural networks in pure Swift.
Developer Tools
Xcode 17 (2025) and Xcode 18 (2026) will bring:
- Redesigned autocomplete — based on machine learning, predicting entire code blocks.
- Swift Playgrounds 5 — a full-fledged environment for professional development on iPad.
- Improved Swift-DocC — documentation generation with support for diagrams and interactive examples.
