PHP for Machine Learning: Myth or Reality?

The world of machine learning (ML) is firmly associated with Python, R, and Julia. However, developers who work with PHP — one of the most popular languages for web development — often ask themselves: "Can PHP be used for ML?" The answer: yes, it can, but with a number of caveats. In this article, we will look at what libraries exist, how to write a simple ML model in PHP, and in which cases this is truly justified.

The article is intended for beginners who are already familiar with the basics of PHP and want to try their hand at machine learning without switching to a different technology stack.

Main PHP Libraries for Machine Learning

The PHP ecosystem for ML is not as rich as Python's, but several mature libraries do exist. Let's look at the most popular ones.

PHP-ML (PHP Machine Learning)

PHP-ML is the most popular and actively maintained library. It provides a wide range of algorithms: classification, regression, clustering, data preprocessing, and even neural networks.

Installation example via Composer:

composer require php-ai/php-ml

Example of simple classification using Support Vector Machine (SVM):

<?phprequire_once __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';

use Phpml\\Classification\\SVC;use Phpml\\SupportVectorMachine\\Kernel;

// Training data: [weight, color] 0 - green, 1 - red$samples = [[150, 0], [170, 0], [130, 1], [180, 1]];$labels = ['apple', 'apple', 'tomato', 'tomato'];

$classifier = new SVC(Kernel::LINEAR, $cost = 1000);$classifier->train($samples, $labels);

// Predictionecho $classifier->predict([160, 0]); // appleecho $classifier->predict([140, 1]); // tomato?>

TensorFlow PHP

There is an official binding to TensorFlow — TensorFlow PHP. It allows loading pre-trained models and performing inference (predictions). However, it is not suitable for training models from scratch — that is done in Python, while PHP is used only for production deployment.

Example of loading a model and making a prediction:

<?phprequire_once 'vendor/autoload.php';

use TensorFlow\\TensorFlow;use TensorFlow\\Session;use TensorFlow\\Graph;

$graph = new Graph();$graph->importGraphDef(file_get_contents('model.pb'));

$session = new Session($graph);$input = $session->input('input_tensor');$output = $session->output('output_tensor');

$result = $session->run([$input => [[1.0, 2.0, 3.0]]]);print_r($result);?>

Rubix ML

Rubix ML is a modern library that aims to replicate the functionality of scikit-learn. It supports pipelines, cross-validation, and many algorithms. Suitable for more complex projects.

Example with linear regression:

<?phprequire_once 'vendor/autoload.php';

use Rubix\\ML\\Regressors\\Ridge;use Rubix\\ML\\Datasets\\Labeled;

$samples = [[1], [2], [3], [4]];$labels = [2, 4, 6, 8];

$dataset = new Labeled($samples, $labels);$estimator = new Ridge();$estimator->train($dataset);

echo $estimator->predict([[5]]); // ~10?>

Limitations of PHP in Machine Learning

Despite the availability of libraries, PHP has a number of fundamental limitations that make it not the best choice for ML.

Performance and Typing

PHP is an interpreted language with dynamic typing. This is slow for mathematical computations. In Python, this problem is solved by C-based libraries (NumPy, SciPy) that operate at a low level. In PHP, there are practically no such optimized mathematical packages. All operations are performed in PHP code, which is critical for large datasets.
