Java 2025 Curriculum: Where to Start for Programmers

Java remains one of the most in-demand programming languages in the world. In 2025, it holds strong positions in enterprise development, fintech, Big Data, and Android. If you have decided to learn Java from scratch, it is important not just to learn the syntax, but to build the right learning trajectory. We have prepared a current curriculum to help you confidently enter the profession.

Stage 1: Foundation (0–2 months)

At this stage, your main task is to understand the logic of the language and learn to write simple programs. Don't rush: lay the foundation you will build on in the future.

  • Installing JDK and IDE: start with IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition or Eclipse. Set up the Maven or Gradle build tool.
  • Syntax basics: variables, data types, conditional operators (if, switch), loops (for, while).
  • OOP in Java: classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, encapsulation. This is the heart of the language.
  • Arrays and strings: working with String, StringBuilder collections, basic algorithms.
  • Exceptions: try-catch-finally, checked and unchecked exceptions.

Practice: write a console calculator, a "Guess the Number" game, a simple TODO list.

Stage 2: Advanced Basics (2–4 months)

Now we delve deeper into the Java mechanisms that make the language powerful and secure.

  • Collections: List, Set, Map, Queue. Study HashMap, ArrayList, TreeSet. Understand equals() and hashCode().
  • Generics: parameterized types, wildcards, type erasure.
  • Multithreading: Thread, Runnable, ExecutorService, synchronization, Lock, Concurrent collections.
  • Stream API and lambdas: functional programming in Java 8+. Filtering, mapping, reduction.
  • File handling: java.io and java.nio, serialization, reading and writing.

Practice: implement a multithreaded log parser or a simple in-memory database.

Stage 3: Tools and Databases (4–6 months)

Java rarely works alone — it's time to master the ecosystem.

  • SQL and JDBC: basics of relational databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL), CRUD operations, transactions.
  • Version control systems: Git, GitHub/GitLab, working with branches, pull requests.
  • Logger and testing: Log4j/SLF4J, JUnit 5, Mockito, TDD.
  • Build tools: Maven or Gradle — dependency management and building.

Practice: write a console application for tracking books with storage in PostgreSQL.

Stage 4: Spring Boot and Microservices (6–9 months)

Modern Java development is unthinkable without Spring. In 2025, Spring Boot 3.x is the industry standard.

  • Spring Core: IoC, Dependency Injection, beans, context.
  • Spring Boot: auto-configuration
