How PHP is Capturing the Cloud Computing Market
In 2025, the cloud computing market witnessed an unexpected turn: the PHP programming language, long considered a "dinosaur" of web development, is showing record growth in the serverless and microservices architecture segment. According to a fresh report from the CloudNative Computing Foundation (CNCF), the share of PHP projects in cloud deployments has grown by 34% over the last 12 months, outpacing Python and Go in adoption rates in the enterprise sector.
The key driver was the PHP 8.4 update, released at the end of 2024. The next-generation JIT compiler and native support for asynchrony via Fibers allowed PHP to achieve performance comparable to Java, with significantly lower memory consumption. "We saw a 40% reduction in the cost of cloud instances when migrating from Python to PHP for API gateways," said Platform.sh CTO Fred Plumb in an interview with TechCrunch.
A particular boom is observed in the BaaS (Backend as a Service) sector. Startups like Laravel Cloud and Symfony Serverless attracted a total of $120 million in venture capital investments in the first quarter of 2025. "PHP is no longer just a language for WordPress. We are launching full-fledged event-driven architectures on RoadRunner and Swoole that handle 2 million requests per second on a single Kubernetes cluster," comments Laravel founder Taylor Otwell.
Major cloud providers are also adapting. AWS announced dedicated optimized instances for PHP 8.4, and Google Cloud launched a beta version of Cloud Functions with a native PHP runtime. According to the JetBrains Developer Survey 2025, 27% of PHP developers are already using cloud serverless technologies, and this figure is growing by 15% annually.
However, experts warn: "PHP is catching up, but not overtaking. In heavy computing and ML inference, it still lags behind," notes Gartner analyst Michael Warren. Nevertheless, for web backends and API services, PHP is becoming the new standard for cost-efficiency in the cloud.
