Major open source PHP project seeks contributors: join the development of a platform for tests and quizzes

The PHP developer community has received an interesting offer: one of the market leaders in open source online testing solutions has announced a call for contributors. The project in question is LimeSurvey — a powerful tool for creating surveys, tests, and quizzes, used by millions of users worldwide. The team is looking for PHP developers of various levels to accelerate the development of a new version and improve existing functionality.

Why is this important for the PHP community?

LimeSurvey is not just another script. It is a mature project with a 20-year history, running on pure PHP (without frameworks!) and using modern practices: Composer, PSR-4, PHPUnit, as well as integration with Redis and MySQL. Participating in such a project is an excellent opportunity to:

  • Level up skills in working with legacy code and its refactoring;
  • Study the architecture of a large web application;
  • Join a community of experienced PHP developers;
  • Add a real commercial project to your portfolio (MIT license).

What tasks are offered to contributors?

Several areas for contribution are currently open. The team is looking for specialists ready to work on:

  • UI/UX updates — migrating the interface to Bootstrap 5 and modern CSS frameworks;
  • Performance optimization — refactoring database queries, caching, profiling;
  • New features — developing plugins for integration with WordPress, Moodle, and Telegram;
  • Testing — writing unit tests and functional tests for existing modules;
  • Documentation — updating Russian-language documentation and code examples.

Technical requirements and tech stack

For comfortable work with the code, you need to know:

  • PHP 7.4+ (8.0+ recommended);
  • Object-oriented programming;
  • Basics of working with Git (GitHub Flow);
  • Familiarity with Composer and PSR standards.

Experience with JavaScript (jQuery, Vue.js) and databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) is a plus.

How to join?

The onboarding process is extremely friendly. Simply:

  • Go to the LimeSurvey GitHub repository;
  • Choose an issue labeled good first issue or help wanted;
  • Fork the repo, write code, and submit a Pull Request.

For beginners, the team holds weekly calls on Discord where you can ask questions and get code reviews. Detailed documentation for setting up a local development environment is also available.

What do contributors get?

In addition to experience and community gratitude, active participants can expect:

  • Public recognition on the project page (Contributors Hall of Fame);
