Rust Community Chooses Best Libraries of 2024: Full Overview
Every year, the Rust developer community takes stock, selecting the most useful and innovative libraries. In 2024, the Rust Libs of the Year vote gathered a record number of participants — over 3,000 developers from around the world. We are publishing an exclusive overview of the winners and nominees that are setting trends in the Rust ecosystem.
Winners in Main Categories
- Best Web Library — Axum. The framework from the Tokio team surpassed Actix-web and Rocket thanks to its convenient modular architecture and asynchronous performance. It is especially valued for its integration with Tower and Tower-http.
- Best CLI Library — Clap v4. The new version of the command-line argument parser received the award for improved error messages, man-style help output, and full support for derive macros.
- Best Data Library — Polars. The DataFrame library written in Rust continues to gain popularity among data analysts. In 2024, it added support for streaming queries and integration with Apache Arrow.
Special Nominations of 2024
In addition to the main categories, the community highlighted several projects that changed the game:
- Best Newcomer — Bevy 0.13. The Rust game engine continues to develop rapidly. This year, it added support for real-time ray tracing and an improved ECS framework.
- Best Security Library — cargo-audit. The dependency auditing tool received a new feature — automatic vulnerability remediation via Cargo.lock updates.
- Best Networking Library — Hyper 1.4. The asynchronous HTTP client and server became even faster thanks to a new implementation of HTTP/2 multiplexing.
Why These Libraries Matter for Developers
The community's choice reflects key trends in the Rust ecosystem: growing interest in web development (Axum), data analysis (Polars), and security tools (cargo-audit). For Python developers learning Rust, Polars is especially interesting — it can replace Pandas in projects requiring high performance.
All winners are available through the Cargo package manager. We recommend starting your journey with Rust using these libraries — they have excellent documentation and active communities.
