Rust Conference: Main Announcements of 2024

In early December 2024, the annual RustConf conference was held in Berlin, gathering over 1,500 developers from around the world. The event served as a platform for key announcements concerning the future of the language, ecosystem, and tools. We have compiled the most important news that every Rust developer should know.

Stabilization of async fn in Traits

One of the most anticipated announcements is the stabilization of async fn in traits. This is a long-requested feature that allows declaring asynchronous methods in traits without the need to manually return Pin>. Starting with Rust version 1.84, you will be able to write:

  • trait Service { async fn call(&self, req: Request) -> Response; }
  • Automatic generation of hidden Future types for each asynchronous method.
  • Full compatibility with existing async/await ecosystems.

This innovation will significantly simplify writing asynchronous code, especially in web frameworks and network libraries.

New Parser for Improved Error Messages

The Rust team introduced a new experimental parser (based on rustc_parse) that improves the quality of error messages. The compiler will now more accurately pinpoint the source of the problem, suggest possible fixes, and even show examples of correct syntax. This feature is expected to become stable in one of the upcoming releases in 2025.

Cargo: Improvements in Dependency Management

Cargo has gained new capabilities:

  • Workspace-only features — you can now define features available only within a workspace, simplifying monorepos.
  • Improved caching — speeding up rebuilds by up to 30% through optimized artifact storage.
  • Integration with cargo-semver-checks — automatic checking for semantic versioning violations when publishing packages.

Plans for 2025: Borrow Checker and Safety

Rust's chief architect, Nako Thompson, announced the roadmap for 2025. Key points:

  • Polonius 2.0 — the next version of the borrow checker, which will reduce false positives and improve lifetime analysis.
  • Enhanced safety — introduction of new linters for detecting memory leaks and unsafe patterns in unsafe code.
  • Stabilization of WASM support — full integration of WebAssembly into the standard library for server-side applications.

Community and Ecosystem

The conference also highlighted community growth: the number of active contributors on GitHub exceeded 150,000, and the number of packages on crates.io reached 200,000. A grant program was announced to support open-source projects in Rust, especially in the areas of systems programming and embedded devices.

The Rust 2024 conference once again confirmed that the language is moving towards maturity while preserving its core values — safety and performance. Follow updates on pythonlib.ru to not miss new articles and guides on Rust.
